The Application Process

Once you've selected a program, it may take a while to be matched with a child. Don’t get discouraged!!
Feel free to ask questions to the programs you are calling regarding their application and screening process. Sometimes, the process could take 3 days, or it may take up to 3 weeks, months, or longer. It is quite important that the mentoring programs take the time they need to insure the safety and well being of the children, as well as make sure they are meeting the needs, safety, and criteria of you as the mentor.
Mentoring programs will usually incorporate the four points below in some variation, to insure the best possible matches between child and adult.
You can expect to :
Complete the application and screening process. The process may have you fill out an application and may ask you for some references(personal and/or professional). The programs often times conduct a background check and then will ask you for a personal interview.
Participate in a program orientation
Participate in training sessions -initially, and on an ongoing basis if
needed - to enhance your mentor relationship and to inform you about issues facing the youth with whom you are matched with.
